The City of Lomita is pleased to announce a series of ongoing and upcoming projects aimed at enhancing various city facilities, infrastructure, parks and equipment. These projects reflect the city’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents while ensuring that public spaces and services continue to meet the community’s needs.
Completed Projects (Fiscal Year 2023-2024)
Over the past year, several important projects have been completed, focusing on streets, parks, water infrastructure and public safety enhancements:
- Street Reconstruction (Zone C & F): Major street repairs and reconstructions were successfully completed in these zones. Please see map.
- New Park Amenities: New tables and benches were installed at Lomita and Hathaway Parks, improving the recreational experience for visitors.
- Picnic Shelter Refurbishing at Lomita Park: A revitalized shelter offers an updated gathering space for families and events.
- Welcome Signage: A new “Welcome to Lomita” sign was installed at the intersection of Lomita Blvd and Crenshaw Blvd, while two vintage signs will be refurbished to preserve their charm.
- Traffic Calming Toolkit: A toolkit was developed to address traffic concerns and enhance safety on Lomita’s streets.
- Pavement Management Program (PMP) Update: The city completed a comprehensive update to its PMP, ensuring roads are kept in optimal condition.
- Second Potable Well Evaluation: Efforts to strengthen water security included the evaluation of a second potable well.
- New Equipment: The city purchased two backhoes and an aerial bucket truck to enhance the efficiency of city services.
Upcoming Projects
As Lomita continues to grow and evolve, a range of new improvements are planned across various sectors.
Facility Improvements
- Stephenson Center Roof Replacement & Renovation: This project includes restroom upgrades and roof restoration, and is currently in the design phase.
- Tom Rico Center and Lomita Railroad Museum Roof Replacements: Roof replacements for both facilities are in the design phase.
- Appian Way Pump Station Roof Replacement: The wooden roof will be replaced with a sturdy truss frame system. Construction began on September 9.
- Lomita City Hall HVAC Upgrade: The city is upgrading to a more energy-efficient HVAC system, with a public hearing scheduled for October 15.
Stormwater Improvements
- Multi-benefit Stormwater Project in Downtown Lomita: This project aims to reduce flood risk and enhance water quality along Lomita Boulevard and Narbonne Avenue, featuring bioretention areas, pervious pavement, landscaping, benches, and a new bike lane. The project is currently in the design phase.
Water Improvements
- Cypress Water Production Facility GAC Upgrade: The addition of four Granular Activated Carbon tanks will improve water quality, addressing contamination issues. This project is in the construction phase.
- 247th Street Area Water Main Replacement: 3,300 linear feet of new water main will be installed, with construction ongoing.
- Zone G Water Main Replacement (Walnut St, 247th Pl, and Ebony Ln): This project includes 5,000 feet of water line replacement, currently in the design phase.
- Alta Vista Avenue Water Main Replacement: Construction is underway to install a new 6″ water pipe to replace the aging 4″ pipe from 263rd Street to the city limits.
Street Improvements
- Zone G Street Reconstruction – Phase 1: Streets in Zone G, north of Lomita Blvd and east of Eshelman Ave, will undergo overlay and reconstruction. This project is in the construction phase.
- Lomita Boulevard Repair: The city is addressing severe rutting along a 300-foot segment of Lomita Blvd. The project is in the design phase.
- School Traffic Loading Study: The study aims to improve safety for students walking or biking to school. It is currently in the analysis phase.
- Citywide Sidewalk Repair Program: Repairing 27 sidewalks throughout the city, construction began September 10.
Street and Water Improvements
- Narbonne South Pipe Replacement and Street Rehabilitation: 1,600 feet of PVC water pipeline will be installed, and the entire width of Narbonne Avenue, from Pacific Coast Highway to the city’s southern border, will be resurfaced. This project is in the design phase.
