Community Safety Division

The City of Lomita’s Community Safety Division, administered by the City Manager’s Office, is dedicated to creating a safe and welcoming environment for all residents, businesses and visitors. Through various public safety initiatives — such as the CSOs’ proactive patrols throughout parks, business corridors and neighborhoods — along with neighborhood outreach, education and effective code enforcement, we strive to enhance the quality of life in our community. We prioritize safety and encourage collaboration between residents, City staff and local deputies, fostering a shared sense of responsibility to maintain the safety of our neighborhoods.

Safety in Lomita

The use of fireworks remains strictly prohibited in Lomita. Under the Lomita Municipal Code, it is unlawful to manufacture, sell, store, display or use any type of fireworks.

To further address ongoing concerns, the City Council adopted a new ordinance to strengthen enforcement. The proposed updates are designed to increase accountability and provide additional tools for enforcement, including:

  • Increased Administrative Fines: The ordinance establishes a flat fine of $1,000 for all fireworks-related violations.
  • Fireworks Reporting Reward Program: The City will introduce a confidential reporting program that encourages residents to report illegal fireworks activity. Similar to the existing Graffiti Reward Program, individuals who provide information leading to enforcement may be eligible for a $500 reward.
  • Social Host Accountability Provision: Property owners, tenants or others responsible for a property may be held accountable if illegal fireworks activity occurs on their premises.

In addition to these proposed measures, the City plans to continue its dedicated fireworks suppression efforts during peak periods. To help manage increased activity around the Fourth of July, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is expected to provide enhanced enforcement services leading up to and beyond the holiday.

The City encourages all residents to celebrate safely and responsibly. Please report illegal fireworks activity to help protect the community.

The City has seen an increase in illegal dumping, with bulky items like mattresses, furniture and appliances left in alleys, parkways and on public and private property. This not only creates an eyesore but also poses health and safety risks.

Public Works crews continue to respond regularly, collecting over 14 tons of illegally dumped material in two months. Despite ongoing cleanup efforts, the issue persists.

To strengthen enforcement, the City Council adopted a new ordinance that increases fines to $1,000 per violation. The ordinance also introduces a confidential reporting program offering up to $500 for information that leads to prosecution, similar to one in place for reporting graffiti. In addition, property owners, tenants and businesses may be held responsible if they allow or fail to address ongoing illegal dumping on their property.

The City will continue outreach efforts to promote proper waste disposal and encourage residents to report violations to help keep Lomita clean and safe.
