Here are some notable updates and upcoming events happening in and around Lomita:
Lomita Sheriff Station Foundation Car Show
The Lomita Sheriff Station Foundation will host its 1st Annual Car Show on Saturday, Aug. 29, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Fleming Middle School. The community event will feature classic and custom vehicles, trucks, exotics, food trucks, bounce houses, vendors, a DJ and Sheriff vehicles. Spectator admission is free, with proceeds from vehicle registrations benefiting the Lomita Sheriff Station Foundation.
Athens Commercial Bin Collection Strategy
Athens is currently testing a new service strategy designed to reduce the amount of time commercial bins remain on public streets during collection. Under the new approach, bins will be temporarily placed on the street, serviced and returned to their designated locations within an approximately two-hour window. Given the narrow streets and limited parking in some areas of the City, this approach is intended to minimize impacts to residents and parking availability while allowing Athens to safely and efficiently complete collection services. The City will continue to monitor the new approach as it is implemented.
Local Travel Network – Community Input Opportunity
The City continues to move forward with the Local Travel Network (LTN) following City Council and community feedback provided earlier this year. The next LTN Community Meeting will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Tom Rico Center at Lomita Park. Residents will have an opportunity to review the improvement plans for Eshelman Avenue and the Walnut Street/Ebony Lane/253rd Street intersection, speak directly with City staff and project consultants and ask questions about the proposed improvements. E-Bike Rodeo – Sept. 19
Young riders are invited to participate in the City’s free E-Bike Rodeo on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 9-11 a.m. at Fleming Middle School. Hosted in partnership with the Lomita Sheriff Station and the Los Angeles Unified School District, the event is open to youth ages 8-17 and a parent or guardian. Participants will receive hands-on e-bike safety training, practice riding skills, learn about helmet safety and review the rules of the road. Space is limited to the first 40 participants, so early registration is encouraged.
Free Oil Filter Exchange – Aug. 22
Lomita residents can safely dispose of used motor oil and filters at the City’s free Oil Filter Exchange Event this Saturday, Aug. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at AutoZone, 1973 Lomita Blvd. In partnership with CalRecycle, residents can exchange a used oil filter for a new one at no cost and recycle up to five gallons of used motor oil. Properly recycling used oil and filters helps protect local groundwater, waterways and storm drains.
