What is Changing?

The Lomita City Council recently adopted changes effective April 1, 2026, to:

  • Expand solid waste collection from three to five days per week
  • Update the street sweeping maps

These changes are designed to better align street sweeping with trash collection, enhance efficiency and minimize debris left at the curb.

Check this page regularly for future updates on program roll out and specific dates for the start of the new schedule implementation and grace period. Please continue to follow the current sweeping and trash schedules until further notice, as the City trains citation officers and street sweeper drivers on the new schedules.

Timeline & Next Steps

Staff are beginning to implement the revised street sweeping schedule, starting with the installation of poles and signage. Additionally, the City is conducting extensive public outreach ahead of the change in collaboration with Athens Services.

Lomita and Athens Services will coordinate to implement the changes by April 1, 2026, after a grace period, including covering the street sweeping signage to minimize confusion for residents and allow time to adjust to the changes to street sweeping and solid waste collection services. Staff will also coordinate with contractors working on street improvement projects to ensure alignment with the new service schedules.

The grace period for street sweeping enforcement will last until April 1, 2026, at which point the City will resume regular street sweeping enforcement, as outlined in the updated maps above.

These planned changes will enhance Lomita’s trash collection and street sweeping services long term, increasing cost savings, service reliability, cleaner streets, service efficiency, environmental and health benefits and more. Please continue to follow the current sweeping and trash schedules until further notice, as the City trains citation officers and street sweeper drivers on the new schedules.

Background

In response to growing operational challenges, residential complaints and the need to meet regulatory stormwater discharge requirements, Lomita is updating the street sweeping and trash collection schedule and routes.

Key reasons for updating the program include:

  • Reducing trash and debris in City streets
  • Meeting City Council policy requiring all streets to be posted and swept at least twice per month
  • Complying with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit requirements
  • Minimizing impacts to residents and improving parking availability whenever feasible

Frequently Asked Questions

Residential concerns have increased, particularly related to scheduling conflicts between solid waste collection and street sweeping, excessive debris in the streets and limited parking during sweeping hours.

Currently, 95 streets remain unposted, resulting in inconsistent coverage, as sweepers can service these locations only when time and parking conditions allow. Additional challenges include trash bins blocking street sweepers and inefficient routes caused by uncoordinated street additions.

No, there is no price increase associated with the schedule and route changes noted above.

There is not a set date for the new schedules yet, as the City is still making preparations for a successful rollout.

Until further notice, please continue to follow your current street sweeping and trash schedules.

When the new schedules go into effect, there will be a grace period of no citations until April 1 to help residents, drivers and officers learn the new routes.

If there happens to be a 5th week in the month, there will be no street sweeping on either side of the street that week.

The regular schedule will resume the first week of the following month.
