These Updates from the City Manager are designed to keep Lomita residents informed about the City’s ongoing projects, programs and priorities. These updates provide timely information on community improvements, public safety efforts and infrastructure investments, along with highlights of recent accomplishments and what’s coming next.
Published every two weeks, the Updates from the City Manager aim to offer transparency into City operations and ensure residents stay connected to how Lomita is working to enhance the quality of life across the community.
Dear Lomita Residents,
The City of Lomita has been hard at work on numerous projects across the community that will greatly improve residents’ quality of life.
Traffic Calming Efforts
Over the past few months, City staff have been analyzing travel safety in Lomita, specifically for the Local Travel Network (LTN), school zone safety enhancements and adding speed humps.
Please see below for more information on each of these three traffic-calming efforts and click the links to go to the project webpage for more project-specific details.
The Local Travel Network Study
The Local Travel Network study, spearheaded by the South Bay Cities Council of Governments, is nearing completion. Suggested improvements include adding bike lanes, constructing traffic circles and redesigning confusing or unsafe intersections. To see the affected streets and the proposed LTN network, view the Lomita LTN aerial map. Conceptual designs for these upgrades are nearing completion and traffic counts were conducted the week of January 26.
The City hosted a community workshop on January 24 to share information about the proposed concept designs and gather input from participants. If you were unable to attend the workshop, feel free to take the survey to share your feedback: English Survey or Spanish Survey.
The Citywide School Loading Zone Study
From the Citywide School Loading Zone Study, City staff recommended over 40 road enhancements — including increased signage, curb extensions, bike lane additions and crosswalk upgrades — to improve safety for all around school zones. These enhancements will be installed during the LTN road construction, funded by Measure M.
Speed Humps
City staff have also been studying the impact of speed humps in the Lomita community. Staff are currently developing a Speed Hump Policy to calm traffic and slow drivers. Stay tuned for additional details and options for community input as we curate the policy details.
New Pickleball Courts at Lomita Park
The Lomita Park Pickleball Courts are now open and ready for play!
Over the past two weeks, workers have been upgrading the tennis courts at Lomita Park to add new pickleball courts. This refreshed, multipurpose community space now includes one tennis court and four pickleball courts for residents to enjoy. Please note that users need to bring their own nets and gear to play pickleball. I look forward to seeing many of you out on the newly completed courts.

Let’s Talk Lomita
Our Let’s Talk Lomita survey on City service priorities is still live! Last summer, Lomita conducted a community survey where residents identified the following priorities:
- Preventing crimes, including thefts, burglaries and property crimes
- Keeping parks and public areas safe and clean
- Maintaining neighborhood sheriff patrols and emergency response
- Repairing streets and potholes
- Repairing stormwater and sewer pipes
- Maintaining Lomita’s long-term finances
This new survey aims to get additional feedback from Lomita residents on how the City should spend its collected tax dollars. We will use the submitted input to help guide our goals and priorities as we curate the next budget. I invite you to take the survey and help us decide how to use our funding to create a bright future.
Private Property Art Murals
Did you know that any businesses that want to install an art mural must get approval from the City first? The Planning Commission must review and approve all mural requests on private property before installation to keep Lomita beautiful. Learn more about getting Planning Commission approval or submitting an application to confirm compliance with code requirements.
Thank you for your continued engagement, feedback and patience as these projects move forward. We remain committed to enhancing the Lomita experience and making our community a safe and enjoyable place to live, work and play.
