The City of Lomita is pleased to announce three significant upcoming street improvement projects aimed at enhancing the safety and quality of our roadways.
Road Construction on Lomita Boulevard
Beginning in early September, a consultant will conduct a design analysis, with the final deliverable expected
by November 2024. Urgent repairs are planned for a 300-foot section of westbound Lomita Boulevard near Lucille Avenue, where significant pavement deformation has raised safety concerns for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians. In response, the City is launching a comprehensive reconstruction effort to address the issue.
Engineers will perform an in-depth analysis to identify the underlying causes of the pavement settlement. Based on
findings, a new design will be implemented, and this section of Lomita Boulevard will be completely reconstructed to ensure long-term stability.
While construction is in progress, traffic control measures will be in place to maintain the safety of everyone. Drivers are encouraged to exercise caution and follow posted signs and detours in the area.
Pipe Replacement on Alta Vista Avenue
The City of Lomita operates a state-regulated water distribution system consisting of 41 miles of underground piping, with approximately 70% of the system dating back to between 1928 and 1970. This replacement project will significantly improve water flow to residents throughout Lomita.
As part of the City’s long-term water system upgrade plan, a 600-foot section of water pipe along Alta Vista Avenue—stretching from 263rd Street to the city limits—will be replaced throughout the remainder of 2024 and into 2025. This section, originally installed in 1928, is part of the aging infrastructure that no longer meets the City’s growing water demands.
- Pipe Replacement: The existing 4-inch cast iron pipe will be replaced with a more modern and efficient 6-inch PVC pipe, designed to better serve current and future water demands. Additionally, a new water line will be encased with slurry concrete.
- Service Line Upgrades: New 1-inch water service lines will be installed for adjacent properties, improving the reliability of water delivery to residents.
- Fire Hydrant Replacement: The outdated 4-inch fire hydrant will be upgraded with a 6-inch fire hydrant assembly, greatly improving fire protection capabilities.
This work will ensure reliable water sources for the City of Lomita for years to come.
Appian Way Pump Station Roof Replacement
The Appian Way Pump Station, located at 26255 Appian Way, is over 30 years old and requires a roof replacement due to damage from termite infestation. The existing wooden roof will be replaced with a metal truss system, along with new skylights and ceiling-mounted fixtures.
The pump station is critical for controlling water pressure and supply, and its continuous operation is essential.
Work began in early September 2024, with completion anticipated by Spring 2025. Notifications will be posted at nearby residences at least five business days before the start of work.
The City of Lomita remains committed to maintaining and improving the infrastructure that serves our community. These essential projects are designed to enhance the safety, reliability and quality of life for residents and visitors alike. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to complete these improvements.
