The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized the City of Lomita as a Tree City USA, a national honor that celebrates communities committed to effective urban forest management.
The Tree City USA program acknowledges cities and towns that demonstrate a strong commitment to maintaining and expanding their urban trees. To earn this distinction, Lomita met four core standards: maintaining a tree board or department, adopting a community tree ordinance, investing at least $2 per capita in urban forestry and participating in an Arbor Day celebration.
“We are honored to be named and recognized as a Tree City USA,” said Lomita Mayor Cindy Segawa. “Maintaining our urban forest underscores the importance of investing in our community’s health, beauty, and sustainability, and we remain committed to growing our tree inventory for years to come.”
Trees play a vital role in enhancing quality of life by improving air quality, reducing urban heat and minimizing stormwater runoff. They also support local wildlife and help create more livable neighborhoods. When thoughtfully planted, trees can reduce traffic noise, increase property values, lower energy costs for homeowners and even boost mental and physical well-being. These benefits highlight the importance of Lomita’s continued investment in its urban forest.
The Arbor Day Foundation is a global nonprofit dedicated to inspiring people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. With a network of more than one million supporters and partners, the organization has helped plant over 500 million trees in forests and communities across more than 60 countries. The Tree City USA program is celebrating its 50th year of recognizing communities that prioritize urban forestry.
