Here are a few updates from around the City that may be of interest to our community.
Excellence in Financial Reporting
The City of Lomita has once again been recognized for its commitment to sound financial management. For the 22nd consecutive year, the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has awarded the City the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting — the highest recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. This accomplishment reflects the City’s continued commitment to transparency, fiscal responsibility and prudent stewardship of taxpayer dollars. Thank you to our Finance Department and all City staff who contribute to this achievement.
Cypress Water Production Facility Update
The City continues to make progress on the Cypress Water Production Facility Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) Project. A Water Committee meeting has been scheduled to review recent water sampling results collected during the State inspection. Staff anticipates presenting a final project update to the City Council at the July 21 meeting.
Dutch Bros Project Moving Forward
The appeal period for the proposed Dutch Bros Coffee project at Pacific Coast Highway and Cypress Avenue has concluded, and no appeal was filed. As a result, the project will move forward under the conditions approved by the Planning Commission. The applicant may now proceed with the permitting process.
New Lomita Park Marquee Installed
If you haven’t driven by recently, be sure to take a look at the new marquee at Lomita Park! The updated sign enhances visibility for park programs, community events and important City announcements.
“Caught in the Act of Excellence”
Congratulations to Recreation Coordinator Julissa Monge, Code Enforcement Officer II Zay Qazi and Community Safety Manager Will Lawson, the inaugural recipients of the City’s new Caught in the Act of Excellence employee recognition program!
When an elderly, homebound resident was left without food after her son was unexpectedly hospitalized, Julissa quickly connected her with Meals on Wheels and coordinated a wellness check through Will. Zay immediately volunteered to join him and assist, thoughtfully selecting snacks that accommodated the resident’s dietary needs while she awaited meal delivery. Their teamwork, compassion and willingness to go above and beyond provided comfort to a vulnerable resident during a difficult time and exemplify the outstanding service that makes Team Lomita so special.
Street Sweeping Program Refinements
The Street Improvement Ad Hoc Committee will be meeting to review proposed refinements to the City’s recently implemented street sweeping program. The recommended adjustments are based on field observations, operational experience and valuable feedback received from residents. Staff anticipates bringing the proposed modifications to the City Council for consideration later this month.
Team Lomita
To wrap up the week, City employees gathered for our annual Summer Employee BBQ, a great opportunity to celebrate teamwork and recognize the incredible people who keep Lomita running every day. Thank you to Team Lomita for your continued dedication to serving our community.
