A City’s General Plan is more than just a set of policies — it’s a roadmap for the future, guiding growth, land use and development for years to come. Think of it as Lomita’s “blueprint” for progress, ensuring a balanced approach to economic vitality, environmental sustainability and community well-being.
What is the General Plan?
The General Plan establishes how City land is allocated, where buildings are placed and how infrastructure — like roads, parks and utilities — is developed. It also addresses broader topics like public safety, noise, transportation and sustainable growth. The plan ensures that all aspects of urban development align with the City’s long-term vision and the needs of its residents.
Why Update Now?
Lomita’s current General Plan was last updated in 1998. Since then, our community has evolved significantly; growth, changing housing needs and new state regulations necessitate a modernized approach to our plan, reflecting today’s realities and tomorrow’s opportunities.
The proposed General Plan updates center on:
- Meeting State Housing Requirements – The City must accommodate more diverse housing options to address affordability and population growth, in compliance with CA state law. The update will identify new opportunities for residential development while maintaining the charm and character of Lomita’s neighborhoods.
- Revitalizing Commercial Corridors – Key areas like Pacific Coast Highway, Lomita Boulevard and Narbonne Avenue will be reimagined with vibrant, pedestrian-friendly commercial and mixed-use developments. These improvements will foster a thriving local economy and create more destinations for residents and visitors.
- Improving Mobility & Connectivity – The plan will focus on enhancing Lomita’s streets and transportation networks, ensuring safer and more efficient mobility for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
- Addressing Safety & Community Well-Being – Public safety remains a top priority. The new plan will include measures to enhance emergency preparedness, reduce noise impacts and ensure a safe, livable environment for all.
