On Tuesday, August 15, 2023, the City of Lomita extended its partnership with the American Red Cross to redesignate the Tom Rico Center as an emergency shelter to be utilized in the event of an earthquake, flood or other natural disaster.

Lomita is the first of the fourteen cities in the South Bay to renew their shelter agreement with the Red Cross. Red Cross’s emergency shelters provide a cost-free place to stay for both Lomita and South Bay residents who may be required to evacuate their homes in the event of a local disaster. Services offered include food and water, first aid, mental health services and help reconnecting with loved ones.

“We deeply value our collaboration with the Red Cross,” said Mayor Barry Waite. “An emergency center of this nature is an essential resource for our residents during a crisis. Our partnership with the Red Cross exemplifies our commitment to bolstering disaster preparedness within the Lomita community”

The Tom Rico Center is located at 24428 Eshelman Ave, Lomita, CA 90717. For more information on how to be Red Cross Ready for any disaster, visit: https://www.redcross.org/get-help/how-to-prepare-for-emergencies.html
