Public safety remains a top priority for the City of Lomita. Through our partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the City continues working to keep Lomita safe. Here are important community updates residents should know.

Oversized Vehicle Parking Ordinance

The City of Lomita has established clear guidelines for its Oversized Vehicle (OV) Permit Program in response to the increasing number and variety of oversized vehicles parked on City streets for extended periods of time. The program is designed to improve safety and visibility, reduce long-term street parking and increase the availability of on-street parking in residential neighborhoods.

Oversized vehicles are defined as any vehicle exceeding 23 feet in length, 80 inches in width or 82 inches in height, and include motor homes, recreational vehicles, boats, buses, trailers and similar vehicles.

Key Permit Requirements:

  • Permits are available only to City of Lomita residents and are issued at no cost.
  • Each permit is valid for 72 hours.
  • A maximum of ten 72-hour permits per year may be issued per household, with consecutive permits allowed up to two times per year.
  • Oversized vehicles must be parked within 1,000 feet of the permit holder’s Lomita residence.
  • Vehicles must comply with street sweeping schedules and all other parking and traffic regulations.

Residents must apply for permits for specific dates. Once approved, the City will provide a permit hanger that must be displayed on the vehicle’s rearview mirror at all times while parked on public streets. Improper use of a permit may result in a citation or towing. Lost or stolen permits should be reported to the City’s Community Safety Division.

Enforcement of the Oversized Vehicle Ordinance began on January 20. For more information visit,  LomitaCity.com/Community-Safety-Division or email SafetyDivision@lomitacity.com

Coyote Safety Awareness

Coyotes are a natural part of our local environment, and residents can take simple steps to reduce encounters and keep pets and neighborhoods safe.

Coyote Safety Tips:

  • Keep pets indoors, especially at night.
  • Do not leave pet food or water outside.
  • Secure trash and compost bins.
  • Clean up fallen bird seed and maintain gardens.
  • Walk dogs on a short leash and remain alert.
  • Clear brush and dense vegetation around homes.

If you encounter a coyote:

  • Stay calm and do not run.
  • Slowly back away while maintaining eye contact.
  • Make yourself appear larger by waving your arms, clapping or making loud noises.

Residents can report coyote sightings directly through the Lomita Connect app. Reports are routed to the City’s Community Safety Division, which evaluates each situation and takes appropriate action or coordinates with the proper authorities as needed.
