Lomita, CA – The City of Lomita has been awarded a $500,000 grant by the Los Angeles County Regional Park and Open Space District (RPOSD). Funded through the voter-approved Measure A clean neighborhoods and open spaces program, the grant will support planning and design efforts for new park space at the site of the U.S. Navy baseball fields at 26800 S. Western Avenue.

“We are incredibly grateful to the RPOSD for helping us advance this project that means so much to our community,” said Mayor Cindy Segawa. “This grant funding enables Lomita to take the next important step in revitalizing the Navy Fields and expanding the parks and open spaces our community members cherish.”

The grant builds on Lomita’s recent announcement that the City has begun the process of taking ownership of the approximately six-acres of property from the U.S. Department of the Navy under the National Defense Authorization Act of 2025. For decades, the site has served as home to youth baseball fields and amenities used by Lomita Little League and the broader community. Congressman Ted Lieu and Congresswoman Nanette Barragán have played crucial roles in the land transfer process, advocating on behalf of Lomita.

Once the transfer is finalized, the property will nearly double the amount of recreational space available to Lomita residents and surrounding communities. The RPOSD grant funds represent a significant step forward in the City’s efforts to revitalize the site and create a space that will benefit the region.

Lomita anticipates officially assuming ownership of the property within the next year. Design and planning the site will involve evaluating the site for safety and accessibility, developing construction-ready design plans and engaging residents in shaping the future of the space.

“The Navy Fields have been part of Lomita’s story for decades,” said City Councilmember and Mayor Emeritus Jim Gazeley, who played on the fields as a Lomita Little Leaguer. “As we begin planning improvements, our goal is to preserve that history while creating a safe, welcoming park space that serves the community for generations to come.”

City staff and elected officials plan to actively engage the community throughout the project through in-person workshops, an online survey, pop-up events and other opportunities for public comment.

“Our goal is to transform the Navy Fields into a space that reflects community while meeting modern recreation and accessibility standards,” said City Manager Andrew Vialpando. “Community input will play an important role as we plan for the future of the site.”

Initial design phases will focus on evaluating and improving existing infrastructure, including the baseball fields, bleachers, fencing, restrooms, electrical systems and snack bar. With the support of the RPOSD Measure A grant, City leaders will continue working toward finalizing land ownership and identifying investment priorities and project timelines.
