Founders Day Weekend 2026
As we approach the halfway point of 2026, it’s hard to believe Founders Day weekend is already here! The weather is expected to cooperate (even if it’s a little cool), street closures are in place and event setup is off to a great start. Thank you to the many City staff members, volunteers, sponsors and community partners who have been working behind the scenes to make this weekend possible.
As a reminder, tomorrow’s key events include the Time Capsule Unveiling at 11:30 a.m. and the Mayor’s Welcome Address at 6 p.m. on the main stage. I look forward to celebrating with all of you this weekend.
Letter of Opposition to SCAG Main Streets Project
As part of its regional Main Streets initiative, the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) is evaluating potential improvements along Pacific Coast Highway (State Route 1). One concept under consideration would repurpose one travel lane in each direction through Lomita to accommodate bicycle facilities.
Given the significant traffic and mobility impacts such a proposal could have on our community, the City has submitted a formal letter expressing our strong opposition. Copies have also been provided to the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG) and our State legislative representatives.
Staff continues to participate in SCAG’s Technical Advisory Committee meetings and will closely monitor the project, providing updates as additional information becomes available.
Red Trolley Car and Navy Fields Update
Preparations for the Red Trolley Car exhibit will begin in the coming weeks as Public Works crews construct the display foundation. This phase of work includes grading, installation of the rail line and railroad ties and construction of the surrounding concrete display pad.
Thanks to strong community partnerships and creative cost-saving efforts, the Port of Los Angeles will donate the rail materials, and the project’s contractor will donate the concrete work. We are still awaiting confirmation regarding the trolley car delivery schedule and the status of our Port of Los Angeles grant application.
The Navy Fields conveyance continues to make excellent progress. The environmental review has been completed and accepted by the U.S. Navy, and the property appraisal is nearing completion. Once the appraised value is received, negotiations regarding the conveyance agreement and purchase price can begin — the final major milestone before transfer of the property. We remain on schedule to complete the conveyance in early 2027.
