On February 25, City of Lomita staff had the pleasure of presenting to students in the STAR afterschool program at Eshelman Ave Elementary School. Serving approximately 90 students from kindergarten through fifth grade, the program provided a valuable opportunity for the City to connect with its youngest community members.
To ensure an engaging and age-appropriate experience, students were divided into two groups, with City staff also split into teams to facilitate interactive discussions.
Each group of staff members introduced their roles and responsibilities, answered students’ questions and provided insight into how the City operates. A highlight of the event was a special demonstration by the Public Works Department, which showcased a boom truck and a backhoe loader. Students had the unique opportunity to tour these vehicles and learn about their functions firsthand.
As a fun takeaway, students received City of Lomita-branded sunglasses and pencils as souvenirs. The visit was a resounding success, with both students and teachers expressing appreciation for the engaging and informative presentations. City staff also enjoyed the experience and look forward to continuing this partnership with Eshelman Ave Elementary School’s STAR afterschool program in the future.
