This past month, Lomita experienced a special blast from the past as we unearthed the 50-year Lomita Time Capsule during our Founders Day celebrations.
The Capsule was originally buried on July 5, 1976, during a community picnic by local community members and the 1976 Lomita City Council, which included Charles Belba, Jim Cole, Leonard Loy, Hal Hall and Jerry Moore. Community members, service clubs, businesses, schools and other groups were invited to contribute items for burial in the capsule.
During the celebratory unveiling ceremony, Lomita opened the Capsule to discover over 50 items, including:
- A pack of Wrigley’s Spearmint Chewing Gum
- A small bible
- Cassette tapes and a tape player
- A phone book
- A guest book from the day of the Time Capsule burial
- Menus from local restaurants
- The Lomita Senior Citizens Goodtimers club member book
- Local magazines and newspapers
- Various brochures from the City and local schools and churches
- Metro bus maps and routes
- Many patriotic books
- And so much more!
